Baseline Weight
Metrological measurements of empty transport vehicles establish the starting weight used to calculate the net weight of delivered goods. Recording the unladen vehicle tare is a necessary step before any truck is loaded with raw flax straw or processed linen yarn. This empty weight is subtracted from the gross weight recorded when the loaded vehicle passes over the weighbridge.
The resulting net weight is the official quantity used for invoicing and inventory control.
Accuracy Verification
To ensure the accuracy of the net weight, the empty vehicle must be weighed under consistent conditions. Factors like fuel levels, driver presence, and accumulated mud can alter the unladen vehicle tare over the course of a day. Operators of the weighbridge must verify that the truck is empty and that no extra equipment has been added since the last tare measurement.
This verification is crucial for preventing disputes between the transport company and the processing mill.
Operational Efficiency
Frequent weighing of empty trucks can create bottlenecks at the mill entrance during the peak harvest season. To streamline this process, mills use automated license plate recognition and digital tare databases to store the known weights of regular transport vehicles. If a truck’s weight remains stable, it does not need to be weighed empty after every delivery, which reduces transit times.
This operational adjustment helps to maintain a steady flow of materials into the processing facility, particularly when large volumes of flax are being received from multiple farms. By reducing wait times, the mill optimizes its labor and equipment use during critical processing windows.
