Chemical Pretreatment
Alkaline cleaning agents remove natural pectins, waxes, and hemicellulose from raw flax fibres to prepare the material for subsequent dyeing or finishing stages. Sodium carbonate scouring represents the standard method for achieving this purification within industrial linen processing, as it utilizes a mild alkali bath to ensure proper absorbency without damaging the primary cellulose structure of the fibre. This procedure typically occurs after the boiling stage in kier equipment and acts as a foundation for achieving uniform color uptake in the finished fabric.
Technicians measure the efficiency of this process by monitoring the residual weight of impurities remaining on the fibre, a metric recorded in the internal quality control logbook for every production batch.
Operational Parameter
Mill operators adjust the concentration of the alkali solution based on the specific count of the yarn or the weave density of the cloth being processed. Higher concentrations apply to heavier fabrics which require more thorough penetration of the solution to reach internal fibre bundles, whereas lighter materials undergo a shorter immersion time to prevent degradation of the material. A failure to control the temperature during this stage causes non-uniform impurity removal, resulting in streaks when the fabric eventually moves to the dyeing floor.
The laboratory verifies that the pH levels remain within the defined technical range to prevent saponification of the natural oils, a condition that degrades the tensile strength of the linen fibres.
Acceptance Criteria
Quality auditors evaluate the resulting material against the physical standards established in the mill buyer agreement which governs the export shipment of the finished linen product. This document specifies the required level of hydrophilicity, often verified by the sink time of a small fabric swatch in distilled water, as a high sink time indicates that the scouring process failed to remove the hydrophobic waxy layer effectively. Any deviation from these specified limits forces the rejection of the affected lot by the final inspection team.
Standardized test methods distinguish between fibre grade purity and fabric grade finish, confirming that the chemical treatment successfully prepared the cellulose for reactive dyes. Uniformity across the surface of the textile constitutes the final measure of a successful scouring operation.
