Coating Integrity
The ability of a protective sizing agent to stick to the surface of warp yarns determines how well the thread can withstand the high abrasive forces of weaving. Strong sizing film adhesion prevents the protective coating from peeling off or flaking under the action of the loom’s reed and heddles. This coating is necessary for maintaining the integrity of spun yarns, which are susceptible to fraying and breaking.
Weaving Protection
During loom operation, poor sizing film adhesion leads to the rapid shedding of size as dust, which accumulates on the loom parts and causes mechanical issues. When the sizing film clings securely to the flax fibers, it forms a flexible jacket that smooths out the surface hairs and increases yarn strength. This protection is critical for linen warp yarns, which have many loose surface fibres that would otherwise cling to adjacent yarns.
The size formulation is adjusted with binders to ensure that the film remains intact until it is washed out after weaving.
Testing Standard
Laboratory tests measure this property by analyzing the amount of size rubbed off during simulated abrasion tests. High adhesion values correlate with low warp break rates. This testing ensures that each batch of sized yarn is ready for the loom.
