Extracted Material
Long bast fibers obtained after the mechanical removal of the woody stem parts represent the primary output of the scutching mill. The resulting scutched line fibre consists of clean, parallel fiber bundles that are suitable for high grade spinning. This material undergoes rigorous sorting based on color and fiber length before it is baled for shipment to spinning mills.
Chinese spinning operations purchase this premium grade to manufacture high quality linen yarn.
Grading Protocol
Classification of the extracted fiber bundles involves evaluating their mechanical properties and visual appearance against standard reference charts. Inspectors examine scutched line fibre to measure its average length and fiber resistance to manual splitting. The results of these tests are documented in the mill’s shipping manifest and used to negotiate the purchase price.
Spinning mills require long and cohesive bundles to maintain stable run speeds on high draft spinning frames. Batches that do not meet these criteria are downgraded and used for coarser yarn or blending with short tow fibers.
Spinning Yield
Industrial spinning performance and yarn consistency depend on the cleanliness of the incoming long fiber bales. High quality scutched line fibre minimizes the occurrence of thick and thin places in wet spun yarns. Spinning logs track the yield of long fibers to optimize machine settings.
Efficient drafting requires clean and long fiber bundles.
