Trimming Tool
Cutting devices with replaceable blades are used to prepare clean edges on fabric samples for weight and density tests. The razor trimming shear provides a precise cut that prevents the fraying of individual linen yarns. This clean edge is necessary for obtaining an accurate measurement of the specimen dimensions.
It is not used for bulk processing of raw fibres.
Sample Preparation
Mill workers use these tools to cut small rectangles of cloth from the centre of a woven bolt. Using a razor trimming shear ensures that the count of the warp and weft threads remains intact at the boundary of the sample. These samples are then placed in the conditioning room before they are weighed.
Blunt edges would lead to an underestimation of the fabric mass per square metre.
Maintenance Requirement
Dull blades must be replaced frequently to maintain the integrity of the cut. The razor trimming shear requires a hardened backing surface to prevent the blade from skipping over the tough flax fibres. If the cut is jagged, the technician must discard the sample and restart the process.
This tool is specifically designed for the high tensile strength of linen which would dull standard scissors. Safety guards are integrated into the design to protect the technician during the rapid cutting motion required for high-volume sampling.
