Moisture Evaluation
Measurement technique that uses airflow and pressure differentials to determine the water content of flax fibre. Every pneumatic moisture testing provides a faster alternative to traditional oven-drying methods for large volumes of material. It works by passing air through a compressed sample and measuring the resistance, which correlates with the moisture levels of the fibres.
Spinning mills use this data to adjust the weights of raw material lots for commercial transactions.
Commercial Accuracy
Calculation of the dry weight of the flax is necessary to ensure that the buyer is not paying for excess water. Because flax is highly hygroscopic, the results of the pneumatic moisture testing must be recorded at every change of custody. If the moisture content exceeds the standard 12 percent, the price is adjusted downward according to the contract terms.
This test is often performed at the port of entry or upon arrival at the mill.
Processing Utility
Knowledge of the exact water content allows the spinner to set the correct tension on the spinning frames. If the fibre is too dry, it becomes brittle and breaks easily during the drafting process. Regular testing throughout the day helps the mill maintain the correct ambient conditions in the production hall.
Correct moisture data is the foundation of fair trade in the flax market.
