Weight Equilibrium
Atmospheric interaction allows natural fibres to absorb or release water vapour until they reach a steady state. Moisture regain conditioning ensures that flax maintains the standard moisture content required for commercial transactions and technical testing. The standard for flax is typically twelve percent.
Weight measurements taken before this state is reached are considered invalid for trade. Without this step, commercial weights remain inconsistent.
Pliability Management
Dry fibres are brittle and susceptible to breakage during the intensive mechanical actions of hackling and spinning. Through moisture regain conditioning, the flax becomes more flexible and easier to manipulate without damaging the cell walls. This internal lubrication prevents the formation of excessive dust in the mill.
The process occurs in rooms with controlled humidity and temperature.
Testing Environment
Standardised conditions are mandatory for any laboratory assessment of strength or fineness. Unless moisture regain conditioning is performed for at least twenty four hours, the results of a tensile test will not be reproducible. Wetting the fibre too quickly leads to uneven distribution and false readings.
Accurate data depends on this slow and steady absorption. Temperature and humidity must be held within a narrow range for at least twenty four hours to ensure deep penetration. Surface moisture alone is insufficient.
