Analytical Chart
The proportion of fiber weight within specific length intervals provides the primary data for evaluating the spinning potential of flax tow. This measurement, defined as the mass-weighted length distribution, focuses on the heavier long fibers that contribute most to yarn strength. In contrast to numerical counts, this distribution gives a more accurate representation of the material bulk that passes through the mill equipment.
Spin Limit
Heavy long fibers dominate this distribution and determine the maximum count of yarn that the mill can spin. When evaluating the mass-weighted length distribution of a shipment, a high concentration of weight in the short length categories indicates a batch that is unsuitable for fine yarn. The presence of these short fibers increases yarn hairiness and causes frequent breaks on the spinning frame, which reduces mill efficiency.
Standard laboratory testing utilizes comb sorters to weigh each fraction and calculate these percentages.
Mill Adjustment
Machine settings on the drawing and drafting frames are adjusted based on these weight measurements. The mass-weighted length distribution dictates the distance between the drafting rollers to ensure that the long fibers are drawn smoothly without breaking. This adjustment prevents the formation of thick slubs in the finished yarn.
