Mechanical Constraint
Weight specifications for the individual metal weights attached to the bottom of harness cords in a Jacquard loom are essential parameters for maintaining correct warp shed clearance. These lingo deadweight limits prevent the harness cords from tangling or failing to return to their lowest position after a pattern lift. The limits are specified in the loom maintenance manual and logged on the machine setup sheet.
Loom Physics
Each cord in a Jacquard harness requires a heavy weight called a lingo to pull it down against the high tension of the warp yarns. High loom speeds and dense linen warps demand heavier lingos to ensure a clean shed opening during every pick. Exceeding the lingo deadweight limits, however, puts excessive strain on the lifting hooks and the driving harness, causing premature wear or cord breakage.
The mill engineer calculates the optimal weight based on yarn tension, loom speed, and fabric density.
Quality Control
Incorrect weight configurations lead to incomplete shed openings, which cause weft insertion errors and loom stops. Regular inspection of the lingos ensures that they are clean, free of lint, and within the specified weight limits. This maintenance prevents patterning errors and maintains uniform fabric quality.
