Commercial Measurement
Financial transactions for bulk shipments of natural fibers are calculated using a standardized mass value that accounts for variable moisture levels. The invoice weight is the official billable weight of the flax fiber lot, recorded on the commercial invoice and packing list. This value differs from the raw scale weight recorded at the time of loading because it is adjusted to a standardized moisture level.
It establishes the basis for customs clearance and trade payments.
Moisture Standardization
Flax fibers are highly hygroscopic and absorb moisture from the surrounding air during storage and transit. To establish the invoice weight, laboratory technicians first determine the oven-dry weight of the fiber samples. They then add the standard commercial moisture regain of twelve percent to calculate the correct billable mass.
This standardized method ensures that buyers do not pay for excess water and that sellers are not penalized for moisture loss during dry transit conditions. In many Chinese spinning mills, this calculation is audited against incoming laboratory samples to confirm that the fiber delivered matches the moisture profiles agreed upon in the sales contract.
Settlement Validation
Discrepancies between the shipping weight and the receiving weight are resolved through this calculation. If the fiber is received with moisture below the standard, the invoice weight is still used for payment. Independent inspectors record the certified weight in a certificate of analysis.
