Coating Formulation
Protective film application on bast yarn sheets involves applying a specialized mix of starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, and lubricants to manage the unique stiffness of the natural material. High-performance mills use flax fiber sizing to increase the tensile strength and smoothness of linen warp yarns before they enter the loom. The structural stiffness of flax fibers makes the yarn brittle and highly prone to shedding under tension.
To address this, the sizing mix must coat the surface while penetrating the yarn core to bind the individual fibers together.
Moisture Control
Drying of the sized flax warp must be managed carefully to prevent over-drying, which makes the yarn brittle. The sizing process requires the flax fiber sizing line to maintain a residual moisture level of around eight to ten percent in the yarn sheet. This moisture acts as a natural plasticizer, ensuring the linen fibers retain their flexibility during shed formation.
If the yarn is over-dried, the starch coating cracks, which exposes the fibers to abrasive wear during weaving. Proper temperature profiles on the multi-cylinder drying range ensure that the protective film remains cohesive and flexible.
Weaving Performance
Uniform size application reduces the coefficient of friction as the yarn passes through the loom harness. This reduction minimizes lint accumulation and prevents yarn breakage during high-speed production.
