Material Assessment
Quality checks evaluate the average diameter of flax strands before the spinning process begins to ensure the correct yarn count can be achieved. The fiber fineness audit provides the necessary distribution data for blending different flax batches together in the preparatory stages. Fiber inspectors record the micronaire values in the Raw Material Inspection Certificate.
Consistent testing helps avoid yarn irregularity and high breakage rates during spinning. Fine fibers allow more individual strands to sit in the yarn cross-section, which directly enhances the strength of the spun thread and leads to more uniform fabric textures.
Batch Selection
Selecting appropriate raw flax batches depends on matching the fiber diameter to the intended yarn weight. Through the fiber fineness audit, the spinner identifies whether a shipment is suited for fine handkerchief linen or heavy canvas fabrics. This assessment prevents the misallocation of high-value long-staple fibers to coarse yarn runs.
The results are recorded on the Spinning Intake Docket to guide the blending crew.
Loom Efficiency
Inconsistent fiber diameters can cause thin spots in the spun yarn, leading to frequent thread breaks on the warp beam during high-speed weaving. Running a fiber fineness audit reduces these errors by excluding coarse lots from fine wet-spinning lines. This screening protects the efficiency of the weaving department.
