Yarn Formation
Mechanical drafting of dry flax fibres utilizes high draft roll pressure to slide the individual bundles past each other without thermal softening of the pectin binders. In dry ring spinning, the roving passes directly through the drafting rollers to the spindle, creating a yarn that is bulkier and more hairy than its wet-spun counterpart. This technique produces coarser yarns ranging from four to twenty lea, which are suitable for heavy fabrics and industrial upholstery.
The absence of water means the natural gum remains intact, which provides high initial stiffness to the spun yarn.
Mill Operation
Spindle speed adjustment is critical to prevent excessive end-breaks caused by the high friction of dry drafting. Modern Chinese mills regulate humidity levels in the spinning room to maintain fibre flexibility during the dry ring spinning process. This environmental control reduces fly waste and protects the workers from airborne dust.
Product Grade
Fabric durability and structural density represent the primary characteristics of the textiles woven from these yarns. A dry-spun yarn has a higher diameter for its weight than wet-spun yarn. The finished cloth exhibits a rustic texture that is highly valued for specific decorative applications.
Buyers specify the maximum allowable neps and thick places in the contract.
