Kinetic Analysis
Mechanical tensile measurement describes the resistance encountered when a bundle of fibres is drawn out to reduce its linear density. In the wet spinning of flax, drafting force kinetics governs the tension required to slide individual technical fibres past each other as the sliver passes between the feed and drafting rollers. Warm water softening weakens the pectin bonds between the flax bundles, which lowers the necessary drafting tension.
Slivers with inconsistent moisture or high gum content generate erratic force peaks during drafting, which disturbs the drafting flow.
Drafting Resistance
Opposing rollers apply pressure to the moving fibre bundle to establish a controlled draft ratio. When the drafting speed increases, the hydrodynamic lubrication from the warm water bath reduces the sliding friction coefficient. If the drafting force exceeds the cohesive strength of the roving, premature sliver breakage occurs, which leads to machine downtime.
Quality Assessment
Mill quality control departments use these measurements to optimize the drafting zone settings on the wet spinning frame. Technicians record yarn draft force values in the spin line parameter log to ensure consistency between different flax roving batches. This monitoring prevents thin places in the spun yarn, thereby reducing the number of breaks during the subsequent weaving stage.
