Fineness Distribution
The fiber bundle width at the ninetieth percentile of the distribution defines the fine limit of the fiber population. This D90 bundle percentile indicates that ninety percent of the analyzed fiber bundles are wider than this measured value, showing the extent of fiber split. A lower percentile means that the fiber population contains a high proportion of very fine filaments.
This metric is used to evaluate the potential for spinning ultra-fine linen yarns.
Analysis Protocol
High-resolution imaging of flax combs determines the D90 bundle percentile before the fibers enter the drafting frames. Chinese spinners record this metric in the pre-spinning quality report to verify that the hackling machines are working correctly. Adjustments to the comb speeds and pin layouts are made based on these readings to optimize fiber separation.
If the value is too high, it means the hackling process was not effective enough, which requires the flax to be processed again.
Loom Success
An optimal D90 bundle percentile helps in producing linen yarns that have fewer thin places and a higher resistance to tensile breaks. This leads to a smoother loom operation with fewer warp breaks. It ensures the final fabric is of export quality.
