Coarse Limit
The measurement of flax fiber bundle width at the tenth percentile of the distribution indicates the proportion of the coarsest fiber bundles in a sample. This D10 bundle percentile represents the upper limit of bundle size that has survived the hackling process. High values show that a large fraction of the bundles remain undivided and thick, which limits the yarn’s potential fineness.
Low values mean that the fiber preparation is highly uniform.
Spinning Performance
Technicians use optical analyzer instruments to calculate the D10 bundle percentile from a comb of combed flax. Knowing this value allows the spinning mill to adjust the draft ratios and the pin settings on the drawing frames. When the D10 bundle percentile is too high, the coarse fibers cause frequent yarn breakages and thin-thick places during the spinning process.
Mills must therefore monitor this value closely to ensure a smooth spinning operation. This parameter is recorded on the daily fiber analysis log.
Yarn Grade
Finer linen yarns require a very low D10 bundle percentile to ensure that the yarn is even and holds together under tension. Coarse fibers in the yarn cause weak spots that fail during winding or fabric formation. This measurement thus dictates the maximum spin limit of the flax batch.
