Weight Determination
Official quantity of a flax shipment is calculated by adjusting the physical weight for the moisture content present at the time of weighing. Commercial flax mass provides the basis for invoicing between the scutched fibre supplier and the spinning mill. This standardized weight includes a fixed allowance for moisture regain as defined by international trade rules.
Buyers use it to ensure they are paying for fibre. Water weight absorbed during storage is discounted. It provides a common language for global trade where environmental conditions vary between the port of origin and the final destination.
Moisture Correction
Samples are drawn from different parts of a bale and dried in a ventilated oven to determine the dry weight. The commercial flax mass is then derived by adding the standard percentage of regain back to this dry figure. This process removes the volatility caused by humidity changes during maritime transit or warehouse humidity.
Calculations are recorded on the official certificate of weight.
Contractual Limit
Discrepancies between the landed weight and the invoiced weight must be resolved using these corrected values. The commercial flax mass prevents disputes regarding the natural hygroscopic properties of the linen fibre. If the actual moisture content exceeds the maximum allowed limit, the total mass is adjusted downward to protect the buyer from paying for excess water.
