Moisture Adjustment
Raw fibre procurement relies on the weight of anhydrous material present within a shipment to establish a consistent basis for financial settlement. A bone dry mass calculation removes the variable water content inherent in flax straw or scutched fibre to determine the weight of the actual cellulose material. This procedure corrects for environmental humidity that would otherwise distort the commercial value of the cargo.
Buyers apply this correction to ensure that payments reflect the actual yield of raw material rather than the weight of absorbed water.
Laboratory Protocol
Technicians determine the moisture percentage by weighing a representative sample before and after thermal extraction. The sample enters an oven where temperatures reach a level sufficient to evaporate all liquid without burning the organic structure. Weighing occurs repeatedly until the scale confirms no further loss of mass, which indicates a state of absolute dryness.
Staff divide the final anhydrous weight by the initial field weight to obtain the dry yield percentage for the entire delivery. Calculations then multiply the total shipment weight by this percentage to derive the absolute quantity for invoicing.
Contractual Application
Mill agreements define the standard moisture regain percentage for processed linen, which acts as the legal threshold for determining whether a seller must compensate for excess water. Acceptance criteria typically allow for a specific deviation from the oven dry result before price adjustments activate. If laboratory results indicate that the moisture exceeds the contract limit, the mill reduces the payable mass to account for the surplus water.
This mechanism prevents buyers from paying the full market price for moisture weight instead of actual fibre. Disputes between suppliers and mills regarding final weights resolve through this neutral standard of anhydrous measurement.
