Gravimetric Analysis
Quantitative gravimetric testing measures the weight difference of a material sample before and after solvent or hot water treatment. In the evaluation of raw flax fibres and semi-processed linen yarns, wet extraction dry mass loss determines the percentage of non-cellulosic substances like pectins and waxes removed during scouring. The sample is dried to a constant mass, subjected to chemical extraction, and then re-dried to measure the remaining insoluble mass.
This percentage quantifies the purity of the cellulose and the effectiveness of the chemical scouring run.
Composition Tracking
Sufficient removal of these non-cellulosic components is required to ensure proper fibre separation and flexibility. When too much pectin remains, the fibre bundles are stiff, which makes them difficult to spin into fine yarn counts. Conversely, excessive mass loss indicates that the cellulose fibres themselves have been degraded, which weakens the resulting yarn.
Fibre Verification
Laboratory assistants register the measured mass loss values in the wet processing quality certificate for each yarn batch. This document ensures that the yarn conforms to the buyer’s acceptance criteria for flax purity and strength before export. Spinners compare this mass loss value against their own mill standards to adjust the chemical concentrations in the scouring tanks.
