Mass Discrepancy
The fluctuation in the registered empty weight of transport vehicles between successive weighings introduces errors in the calculation of net material deliveries. In the supply chain of raw flax from European growers to Chinese spinning mills, weighbridge tare variance arises from changes in fuel levels, driver presence, accumulated mud or weather conditions. This fluctuation can lead to large discrepancies in the reported weight of fiber bales.
By establishing a standard procedure for tare measurement, mills ensure that the net weight of flax is accurate and verified.
Control Protocol
Minimizing this error requires weighing the vehicle on the same calibrated scale both immediately before and immediately after unloading the flax bales. This immediate sequence eliminates the impact of fuel consumption and dirt loss that happens when long distances are traveled between the gross and tare weighings. The mill’s receiving office records the truck registration, gross weight and tare weight on the official material intake voucher.
If the tare value deviates from the registered empty weight of the vehicle by more than a specified tolerance, a second weighing is initiated.
Trade Protection
Contractual limits restrict allowable weighbridge discrepancies to a fraction of a percent of the total shipment weight. This restriction protects the spinning mill from paying for non-existent material. The final audit of raw material costs depends on these verified weighbridge records.
