Flow Equilibrium
Quantitative equilibrium maintained between the dry fiber input and the wet chemical output in the sizing or scouring trough during flax processing. In the preparation of flax yarns for weaving, the trough mass balance regulates the pick-up of starch or synthetic sizing agents to ensure consistent yarn strength. This control system prevents the size mix from depleting too quickly or becoming too concentrated during a long production run.
It ensures that every yarn receives a uniform coating of protective materials.
Automated Correction
In Chinese linen mills, automated sensors continuously measure the density and temperature of the sizing liquid inside the trough. If the density drifts, automatic valves inject water or concentrated sizing paste to restore the correct ratio. Maintaining the trough mass balance is essential because excess sizing makes the flax yarn brittle, leading to breakages on the high-speed loom.
Conversely, insufficient sizing leaves the flax vulnerable to abrasion, which causes fuzzing and stops the machine.
Efficiency Tracking
Weaving efficiency depends on the precision of these automatic corrections. Yarn logs from the sizing department record the volume of size used against the weight of the warp beam. This documentation provides a traceable metric that helps identify the cause of any weaving defects.
