Inherent Vibration
Discrete frequency at which a physical structure vibrates when subjected to an initial displacement or dynamic forces. Spinners must know the structural natural frequency of the main frame to avoid operating at speeds that cause resonance. Resonance values are documented in the mill’s structural testing log.
Draft Performance
Operation of the machine at speeds that excite the frame’s natural frequency creates intense vibration that disrupts the draw rollers and spindle assemblies. Disruptions to the drafting path lead to slippage in the flax fiber flow, causing yarn with high linear density variation that is unsuitable for fine linen production. Maintenance teams adjust the machine’s running speed or stiffen the support frames to ensure that operational frequencies remain well away from the critical frequency bands.
These modifications are recorded on the spindle calibration log to prevent thread failure.
Frame Alignment
Vibration of the loom structure from resonant forces alters the path of the rapier and the movement of the harness, which leads to yarn abrasion and irregular cloth density. Maintaining a stable machine base ensures that the yarn interlacing remains highly uniform, which is a key requirement for export-grade linen. Supervisors review the weekly vibration analysis report to ensure that the loom holds its alignment and conforms to the buyer’s strict fabric specifications.
