Waste Management
Environmental standards and yarn costing systems require mills to monitor the movement of all processing waste and by-products. Within the combed sliver department, secondary stream tracking records the collection, weighing and sale of short fibres and shive particles generated during the hackling process. This accounting ensures that no valuable material is lost or sold without documentation.
Tracking Flow
Operators collect the short combing waste from the hackling machines and pack it into dedicated bags with unique barcoded tags. This secondary stream tracking system monitors the mass of this waste to compare it with the raw flax input. If the weight of the short fibres is higher than expected, it suggests that the machine settings are too aggressive or the raw fibre is brittle.
The production supervisor reviews these waste logs daily to adjust the pin settings. This tracking prevents the mixing of high-grade yarn waste with low-grade shive waste.
Audit Trail
Recovered short fibres are sold to paper mills or spun into coarse industrial yarns to recoup some of the processing costs. The finance team matches these waste sales with the production logs. Good tracking supports the mill’s claim of high resource efficiency.
This step ensures that every kilogram of raw flax is accounted for.
