Representative Selection
The process of extracting small, unbiased portions of fiber from different locations within a shipment ensures that the laboratory test results accurately reflect the quality of the entire lot. Through systematic raw flax sampling, technicians collect specimens that represent the average moisture, strength, and impurity levels of the received bales. This procedure prevents the bias that occurs when testing only the easily accessible outer layers of a shipment.
The collected samples are combined and homogenized to form the testing batch for moisture analysis.
Extraction Procedure
Operators use specialized tools to pull fiber bundles from the center of selected bales at different heights to ensure a diverse cross-section. During raw flax sampling, the chosen bales must represent a minimum percentage of the total shipment as specified by international testing standards (often ten percent of the lot). The extracted fibers are immediately placed in airtight plastic bags to prevent any exchange of moisture with the surrounding warehouse air before testing.
This careful isolation is necessary to maintain the integrity of the moisture measurements in the laboratory. The weight of each sample is recorded immediately upon arrival at the test bench.
Chain Documentation
Tracking the origin and handling of each fiber specimen from the warehouse to the laboratory scale is necessary to validate the subsequent test certificates. The record of raw flax sampling includes the bale numbers, lot size, arrival date, and the names of the technicians who performed the extraction. This document acts as a guarantee of authenticity, proving that the analyzed samples indeed came from the specific shipment under review.
If a dispute arises over moisture levels or fiber grade, this sampling log provides the evidence needed to defend the mill’s claim. The document is signed by both the warehouse manager and the laboratory supervisor before any tests are run. This signature chain ensures that the results are legally defensible in negotiations with international fiber brokers.
