Adhesive Strength
Water-soluble synthetic resin used in the sizing process creates a tough protective layer over the natural flax fibres. The polyvinyl alcohol binder provides the necessary glue to hold the loose surface filaments against the main body of the yarn. This prevents the yarn from fraying or breaking when it passes through the loom’s moving parts.
Film Properties
Coating the yarn with this polymer creates a flexible shield that can withstand the bending and stretching of the weaving cycle. Because polyvinyl alcohol binder is more elastic than traditional starch, it is often used for high-density weaves or very fine linen yarns. The resulting film is clear and does not obscure the natural texture of the linen before it is washed.
Different grades of the polymer offer varying levels of hydrolysis to match the specific needs of the weaving mill. High-speed air-jet looms often require a stronger film to protect the warp from the intense air pressure used during weft insertion.
Desizing Ease
Removal of the sizing agent during the finishing stage is simplified because the polymer dissolves readily in hot water. Using a polyvinyl alcohol binder reduces the need for harsh chemicals that could damage the delicate flax cellulose. This efficiency makes it a preferred choice for mills focusing on high-quality apparel fabrics.
