Scouring Bath
Wet processing units apply a non-ionic surfactant to raw flax yarn to remove natural pectin waxes and residual shive particles without forming insoluble calcium soaps in hard water. Water hardness often precipitates anionic wetting agents onto the fiber surface, whereas polyoxyethylene chains maintain emulsion stability through dipole interactions with water molecules instead of dissociation. Scouring baths maintain temperatures near boiling point while liquid circulation forces the detergent solution through dense packages of yarn.
Alkaline sodium hydroxide solutions work alongside the wetting agent to swell the hemicellulose matrix, making alkali degradation efficient. Rinsing stages follow the hot alkaline wash to strip away suspended impurities before the yarn reaches the bleaching vanguards.
Wetting Efficiency
Surface tension reduction enables liquor penetration into the dense lumen of bast fibers during continuous scouring ranges. Surfactant molecules concentrate at liquid air boundaries, lowering interfacial energy from seventy-two down to thirty mN per meter. Wetting times drop below five seconds when concentration exceeds the critical micelle point, measured through standard sinking disk tests specified in buyer quality dossiers.
Excessive surfactant dosing causes persistent foam generation inside circulation pumps, dropping pump cavitation thresholds and leaving uneven detergent residues across the yarn package.
Residue Control
Residual detergent levels on finished linen yarn must remain below zero point one percent by weight to prevent interference with subsequent reactive dyeing stages. Laboratory technicians extract dried yarn samples using Soxhlet apparatuses with petroleum ether solvents, then weigh the evaporated residue against strict mill acceptance limits. High residual surfactant concentrations retard dye molecule diffusion into the cellulose matrix, producing patchy shade depths and poor wash fastness ratings on export woven goods.
Final rinsing vats employ conductivity meters to track dissolved solids, halting the wash cycle only when rinse water purity matches incoming demineralized supply standards.
