Sizing Agent
Natural carbohydrate polymer extracted from plants without chemical or enzymatic modification provides the viscosity needed for yarn preparation. Using native starch in the sizing bath creates a protective film around flax yarns before they enter the loom. This coating reduces the abrasion caused by the movement of the healds and the reed.
Corn or potato variants are common choices for this application. As a raw product, this substance retains its original molecular weight and film-forming properties, which are necessary for the heavy mechanical demands of linen weaving.
Weaving Benefit
Yarn hairiness decreases significantly when the outer fibers are glued down by the dried paste. Because native starch fills the gaps in the yarn structure, the thread becomes stiffer and more resistant to the high tension of modern rapier looms. This physical reinforcement prevents the warp from snapping during high-speed operation.
Removal Condition
Desizing must take place after weaving to ensure that dyes and finishes can penetrate the flax fibers. If the native starch remains on the cloth, the resulting fabric will feel brittle and reject color consistently. Washing in hot water or using enzymes breaks down the film.
This step prepares the grey goods for bleaching.
