Humidity Conditioning
The process of measuring the water content of textile fibers or fabrics under specified atmospheric conditions establishes the basis for all physical testing of raw flax. Adherence to moisture regain ISO 139 requires exposing the yarn or fabric samples to a standard atmosphere of twenty degrees Celsius and sixty-five percent relative humidity until they reach equilibrium. Flax is a natural plant fiber with a high rate of moisture absorption, which can alter its weight, tensile strength, and dimension.
This standardization ensures that different laboratories across the globe generate comparable and reproducible results when testing flax shipments.
Laboratory Standard
To determine the exact regain, technicians dry the linen specimen to a completely bone-dry state to establish its dry mass before conditioning it in the standard atmosphere. The percentage of moisture regain is calculated by dividing the weight of the absorbed water by the oven-dry weight of the fiber. This ratio is critical because linen sold by weight can be artificially inflated if stored in a humid warehouse before dispatch.
Buyers compare the laboratory result against the standard commercial regain of twelve percent to calculate the invoice weight of the shipment.
Certification Correction
Certification of moisture regain provides the basis for adjusting the commercial weight of the raw material. If the flax fiber contains excess water, the billing is discounted to ensure that the buyer does not pay for water instead of plant material.
