Loom Adjustment
Weaving preparation requires the precise coordination of the heald frames to create the correct shed opening for the weft insertion. The calibration of harness lift timing determines the exact moment the warp yarns separate during each crankshaft rotation. This setting is locked into the loom microprocessors and recorded on the style setup sheet before starting a new fabric run.
Proper synchronization prevents the weft yarn from catching on the warp ends as the rapier passes through the shed.
Mechanical Setting
Dobby and jacquard motions utilize adjustable cams or electronic signals to orchestrate the vertical movement of the harness frames. When optimizing the loom for linen yarns, harness lift timing must account for the low elasticity of flax fibers to avoid excessive tension spikes. Operators measure the timing in degrees of the loom cycle, typically setting the shed to close early when weaving dense fabrics to lock the weft pick in place.
This early closure prevents the newly inserted pick from slipping backward before the reed beats it against the fell of the cloth.
Fabric Quality
Improper timing causes yarn abrasion and increases the rate of warp breakages during high-speed loom operation. Wet-spun linen yarns are especially vulnerable to friction when the harness lift timing is incorrectly adjusted on the loom setup. Correct mechanical settings minimize tension wear on these delicate strands.
