Fibre Classification
A processed flax byproduct consists of the short, tangled remnants extracted from the combing stage that require further cleaning to remove woody shive and dust particles before they enter the spinning line. Such carded tow possesses a lower tensile strength compared to long line flax because the mechanical action of the carding machine damages the individual fibre bundles. Operators evaluate the material against the internal mill standard for batch consistency and spinning performance.
This grade represents the secondary input stream for coarse yarn production, which allows factories to balance their raw material costs while maintaining a target count for lower-tier apparel fabrics. The physical length and cleanliness of the strands determine the market price, whereas the presence of residual shive indicates poor machine settings during the prior scutching operation. Quality inspectors record these measurements in the batch summary sheet that accompanies every lot through the mill.
Processing Sequence
After workers remove the initial long fibres, the residual mass moves into a specialized cylinder assembly fitted with fine needles to parallelize the tangled remnants. This action straightens the disordered strands into a cohesive web that rollers then gather into a continuous rope or sliver. Frequent checks occur during this stage to verify that the needles remain clear of debris.
Accumulation of dirt in the needles degrades the uniformity of the output, which forces a production stoppage for manual cleaning of the pins. Mills utilize this stage to integrate specific fibre lengths from different batches to stabilize the feed for the ring spinning frames.
Operational Boundary
Spinning lines accept these cleaned ropes only when the moisture regain level remains below the strict thresholds set by regional trade agreements. Variability in humidity alters the draftability of the fibre, which causes thick spots or breaks in the yarn. Higher levels of non-fibre material effectively shorten the lifespan of the steel rings on the spinning frames.
Each batch receives a unique identifier upon exiting the carding room, which ensures full traceability from the initial bale through the final woven cloth production. Excessive contamination levels lead to immediate rejection by the quality department.
