Optical Configuration
High-precision imaging systems for industrial inspection require highly collimated illumination to eliminate measurement errors caused by perspective distortion. This telecentric backlighting is used in automated textile scanners to capture sharp silhouettes of moving flax yarns and fibers. The setup produces parallel light rays that outline the fiber edges with extreme contrast and clarity.
Technical Operation
An optical source with a specialized lens system aligns the light rays so they emerge parallel to one another and to the optical axis of the camera. When a yarn passes between this light source and the camera, the telecentric backlighting prevents the projection of a blurred shadow even if the yarn moves out of the camera’s depth of field. This allows the measurement software to calculate the true yarn diameter with sub-micron accuracy, which is essential for ensuring that the yarn meets the tight tolerances required for high-speed automated fabric production.
Quality Inspection
The system is installed on spinning frames and inspection tables to detect yarn hairiness and irregularities in real time. Because flax fibers are inherently uneven, this telecentric backlighting allows the automated system to distinguish between a loose fiber tail and the solid core of the yarn. This distinction enables the mill to grade yarn quality more accurately and reject substandard batches before they reach the further stages of production.
