Mass Adjustment
Textile quality testing defines the weight correction applied to yarn samples to account for the lubricating oils and antistatic agents added during spinning. This calculation, called the spin finish pickup correction, subtracts the weight of these added chemical treatments to determine the true weight of the dry flax fiber. The calculation prevents chemical additives from artificially inflating the recorded yarn yield.
This adjustment is necessary to determine the raw material consumption. Standard trade rules specify that the correction must be applied to all commercial transactions of high-grade flax yarn to ensure fair pricing based on actual fiber weight.
Lab Test
Technicians measure this value by washing a sample of the treated flax yarn in a solvent extraction apparatus to dissolve the oils. During the spin finish pickup correction, the solvent is evaporated, and the remaining residue is weighed to find the percentage of chemical pickup. This test ensures that the chemical pickup does not exceed the contract limits.
Trade Correction
Excess finish can cause slippage during yarn processing, whereas insufficient finish increases friction and causes yarn breakage. By applying the spin finish pickup correction, the mill can monitor the application rate of the lubricant while ensuring accurate material accounting. The process maintains both quality and financial control.
