Roll Pressure
Contact force dictates the densification of wet flax roving entering the wet spinning frame, where pneumatic cylinders apply specific kilograms per linear centimeter across the drafting rollers. That downward nip force compresses the moisture film surrounding the pectin bound cellulose, expelling surplus water before the twist enters the yarn. Exceeding the maximum threshold flattens the natural lumen of the elementary fibre, causing permanent structural damage that reduces the tensile strength of the finished linen thread.
Conversely, insufficient pressure leaves erratic water pockets within the strand, creating uneven draft zones that manifest as thick and thin spots in the yarn. The operating window depends on the linear density of the roving and the peripheral speed of the delivery cylinders. Mill technicians record these parameters in the daily spinning log alongside relative humidity and bath temperature readings.
Drafting Resistance
Frictional drag develops when compressed roving passes through the nip point created by the paired brass and rubber cylinders. That localized nip force determines the boundary condition where fibre slippage occurs without breakage, allowing the drafting zone to attenuate the strand uniformly. Higher compression increases the frictional restraint on individual filaments, requiring greater pulling tension from the downstream apron assembly to draw the fibres apart.
When raw material variation introduces stiff woody remnants into the wet roving, the fixed roller setting fails to accommodate the anomaly, resulting in snapped filaments and broken ends on the spinning frame. Operators adjust the pneumatic loading valves incrementally to balance fibre mobility against drafting control.
Finishing Integrity
Compacted yarn geometry directly influences the surface smoothness of woven linen fabrics leaving the loom. That uniform nip force ensures that residual sizing agents penetrate the yarn core evenly during the sizing operation prior to weaving. Inconsistent pressure during the preceding spinning stage creates localized variations in yarn diameter, which prevents the reed from beating up the warp threads at a uniform pick density.
The final fabric grade depends on maintaining stable roller pressure across all spinning positions, distinguishing mill export quality from domestic utility stock. Quality control inspectors verify these surface characteristics using standard photographic comparison charts under standardized daylight conditions.
