Durability Metric
Total number of cycles a weaving harness can endure before the cords or frames suffer mechanical failure. This harness fatigue life is a critical specification for mills running high-speed jacquard looms where the lifting motion repeats thousands of times per hour. Wear typically begins at the connection points where the heddles meet the lingoes.
Monitoring this lifespan prevents sudden breakdowns that cause catastrophic tangles in the warp.
Degradation Mechanism
Wear process influenced by the friction between the flax yarn and the heddle eye, alongside the tension applied by the harness springs. When technicians estimate the harness fatigue life, they must account for the abrasive nature of linen fibres which can score the metal or ceramic surfaces. Heat generated by rapid movement accelerates the brittleness of synthetic cords used in the assembly.
Replacing components before they reach their limit reduces the risk of fabric defects caused by missed picks. Mills often keep detailed logs of every harness change to build a predictive maintenance schedule based on actual run-times.
Operational Limit
Replacement interval set by the manufacturer to maintain the timing of the shed opening. If the harness fatigue life is exceeded, the cords may stretch and cause uneven tension across the width of the cloth. Regular inspection of the mounting brackets is necessary.
