Compliance Mark
Comprehensive ecological standards govern the processing of organic natural fibers across environmental and social compliance parameters. A GOTS certification mandates that linen textiles contain a minimum percentage of certified organic flax grown without synthetic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Processing mills in China applying for this standard must demonstrate environmental management systems and wastewater treatment capability.
The mark assures global buyers that organic integrity was maintained from yarn spinning through wet finishing.
Processing Restriction
Chemical restrictions prohibit toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde and halogenated solvents across all wet processing steps. Under GOTS certification, bleaching flax yarns requires oxygen based compounds rather than chlorine agents to protect worker health and effluent quality. Dyehouses must select colorants and auxiliaries evaluated for low toxicity and high biodegradability.
Mill operations record chemical consumption logs and maintain sludge discharge records for inspector review. Social criteria run parallel to environmental constraints, requiring compliance with International Labour Organization standards regarding working hours and fair wages. Certified facilities must maintain dual records that prove physical separation between organic flax lots and conventional flax lots during spinning and weaving.
Verification Ceiling
System boundaries limit coverage to processing operations and business transactions following agricultural harvest. A GOTS certification does not cover raw flax farming itself, which requires baseline organic agricultural standards like NOP or European organic regulations. Final retail seller accreditation is required only when products are repackaged or relabeled.
