Diagnostic Standard
Fiber extraction protocols establish the standardized method for retrieving internal material from pressed bales of raw flax to assess moisture content and purity. During this assessment, the core sampling procedure allows quality technicians to gather representative fibers without opening the metal bands of the compressed bale. This prevents moisture loss or environmental contamination prior to laboratory evaluation.
Accurate testing ensures the mill pays a price aligned with the actual dry weight of the linen source material.
Operational Execution
Handlers insert a hollow, sharpened steel tube deep into the center of the bale along its longitudinal axis to retrieve the specimen. This extraction tube, powered by a heavy-duty electric drill, cuts a neat cylindrical cross-section through multiple layers of the dense flax block. Technicians then push the collected sample directly into an airtight plastic container to prevent evaporation.
The total weight of the gathered fiber must exceed fifty grams to provide enough substance for both gravimetric drying tests and trash content analysis.
Quality Assurance
Laboratories utilize these sealed containers to verify that shipments comply with purchase contracts before spinning begins. If the moisture level exceeds twelve percent, the mill applies a financial discount to the shipment to compensate for excess water weight. This systematic approach ensures that processed fibers behave predictably during yarn spinning.
