Alkaline Reduction
Chemical instability within bast fibre processing leads to a loss of total length during the mercerization phase. Caustification shrinkage occurs when concentrated sodium hydroxide penetrates the amorphous regions of the cellulose structure, forcing a contraction in the physical dimensions of the textile. Mill supervisors document this contraction in the production log to adjust the tension settings on the finishing frames.
Control of this movement prevents uneven density in the final roll.
Processing Variation
Tension applied to the fabric during the immersion in alkali acts as a physical countermeasure to the contraction. The magnitude of caustification shrinkage depends upon the maturity of the flax and the concentration of the solution. Excessive caustic exposure causes the fibres to swell laterally while pulling inward, which restricts the width of the bolt.
Monitoring the take-up rate provides a gauge for the integrity of the mechanical tensioning system.
Quality Protocol
Standardized testing procedures evaluate the dimensional stability of the cloth after a prescribed cycle of chemical contact and subsequent washing. Laboratory reports calculate the percentage of change in length and width compared to the original measurements of the raw material. Discrepancies between the predicted values and the actual results trigger an audit of the chemical concentration levels at the saturation bath.
Proper calibration of these parameters minimizes the difference between intended output and actual yield.
