Invoice Correction
Contractual agreements in the linen trade specify the allowable moisture content and quality parameters of supplied flax fibers. A billing adjustment is the formal financial correction applied to the purchase invoice when the delivered fiber fails to meet these pre-established standards. The mechanism ensures that the spinning mill pays only for the actual dry weight of the flax plus the legally permitted moisture allowance.
It prevents disputes over natural weight fluctuations.
Regain Calculation
During the moisture testing phase, the mill takes random samples from incoming fiber bales to determine the oven-dry weight. The laboratory value is increased by the official commercial regain percentage for flax, which is twelve percent, to find the commercial weight. If the actual weight of the delivery exceeds this commercial weight because of high water absorption, a downward billing adjustment is executed.
The resulting calculation removes the cost of the excess moisture from the total amount owed by the buyer.
Financial Settlement
When the quality of the delivered linen yarn falls below the tensile strength specified in the purchase contract, the billing adjustment compensates the mill for the reduced processing efficiency. Spinning mills experience higher breakage rates when working with substandard yarn, which increases production costs and reduces total output. The buyer presents the lab reports to the yarn merchant to justify the discount.
Settlement occurs through a credit note or a direct reduction of the next remittance. Such a practice stabilizes trade relationships by distributing risk fairly between spinners and distributors.
