Degradation Assessment
Biochemical and sensory testing protocols measure the breakdown of pectic substances binding bast fibre bundles to the woody core of harvested flax stems. In raw material receiving docks, retting evaluation determines whether straw has reached optimal microbial decomposition without cellulose degradation. Experienced inspectors flex straw stems and pull fibrous ribbons away from the shive to assess extraction resistance.
Stem evaluation boundaries cover post-harvest field decomposition up to the mechanical scutching line. The assessment terminates once mechanical decortication strips the woody shive from the fibrous bast bundles, after which mechanical fibre grading methods take precedence.
Biological Monitoring
Under-retted flax yields coarse fibre bundles with residual pectins that resist wet-spinning drafting, whereas over-retted material exhibits fungal digestion of cellulose that drastically lowers yarn breaking strength. Chinese spinning mills purchasing dew-retted flax from Normandy or Belgium rely on retting evaluation to verify incoming raw stock against contract specifications. Laboratory technicians conduct water extraction tests, chemical calcium chelation assays, Fried tests, and photometric colorimetry to determine the degradation degree of the pectins.
Chemical analyses measure the percentage of water-soluble matter and residual gum content in twenty-gram fibre samples. The receiving inspection sheet logs the retting index on a standard scale from under-retted yellow to over-retted slate grey, providing the blending department with the data required to balance lot formulations.
Acceptance Standard
Commercial contracts for raw flax fibre designate specific retting classes to govern pricing adjustments and rejected deliveries. Purchasing agreements stipulate that lots failing visual and chemical thresholds undergo price reductions or total return to the European scutching co-operative. Certified test certificates issued by testing houses accompany each export container, confirming that the retting level meets spin line parameters.
