Standard Method
International standards establish the uniform procedures required to evaluate yarn shipments in commercial trade. The iso 10290 standard specifies the requirements for yarns that are frequently blended with linen in industrial mills. It defines the tolerances for yarn count, breaking force, and twist levels.
Technical Metrics
Evaluating the physical properties of blended yarns requires testing under controlled conditions to ensure accuracy. The iso 10290 standard provides the basis for measuring yarn count deviation, coefficient of variation of mass, and tensile properties. For linen-cotton blends, these tests must account for the different moisture regain properties of the two fibres.
The standard prescribes testing after the yarns have reached moisture equilibrium in a standard atmosphere. Applying these procedures ensures that the blended yarn has the necessary strength to withstand the high tension of modern looms.
Quality Grading
Yarn shipments are sorted into quality classes based on their performance in standardized tests. Using the parameters set by the iso 10290 standard, buyers can verify if a delivered lot of yarn meets the contractual specifications. Lots that fall outside the permitted tolerances for twist or strength can be rejected or re-negotiated.
This objective testing reduces the reliance on subjective assessments during trade disputes.
