Weight Procedure
Quantifying the mass of an empty container, vehicle or packaging material allows for the precise calculation of the net product content within a load. An accurate tare weighment is the second essential step in the reception of flax at a processing mill, following the initial full weight assessment. This value represents everything that is not fibre, including the weight of the truck, the pallets and the strapping materials used to secure the bundles.
It ensures that the mill pays only for the actual raw material received rather than the deadweight of the transport equipment.
Verification Logic
Measurements typically take place after the load has been fully discharged at the loading dock. A tare weighment relies on the same calibrated scale as the entry weight to avoid measurement discrepancies caused by sensor variation. If the empty truck records a weight higher than its theoretical standard, the inventory records adjust to lower the accepted tonnage.
This process protects the integrity of the fibre counts inside the resource planning system.
Commercial Standard
Contracts between merchants and linen mills specify the methods used to determine these empty masses during delivery. Consistent tare weighment protocols eliminate disputes over assumed weights versus actual measured hardware volumes. Any residue left inside the vehicle after unloading must be documented if it impacts the recorded mass of the empty unit.
High level precision at this stage facilitates clean mass balance audits at the end of the fiscal quarter.
